Score Breakdown
Effortless Expansion for PlayStation 5
The WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD, available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, consistently earns high praise from PlayStation 5 owners for its ability to dramatically expand console storage. Many users, struggling with the PS5's limited internal space, found this SSD to be a much-needed solution, allowing them to install numerous large games without constant deletion and re-downloading. Owners frequently highlight the immense storage provided, with some noting they still had terabytes of space left even after installing multiple demanding titles like Call of Duty, GTA V, and Genshin Impact. The product's official PlayStation licensing is a significant draw, instilling confidence in its compatibility and performance, a sentiment echoed by a large number of satisfied buyers.
Seamless Installation and Robust Performance
A standout feature of the WD_BLACK SN850P is its ease of installation, which many describe as surprisingly simple, often taking just minutes with the aid of online video tutorials. The drive integrates seamlessly with the PS5, being immediately recognized and formatted by the console upon startup. While some users reported minor difficulties with removing the PS5's side panel or encountered delicate screws in the SSD bay, the overall installation experience is overwhelmingly positive. Once installed, the SSD delivers exceptional perceived speed, with games loading quickly and running smoothly without any noticeable lag or performance degradation compared to the console's built-in storage. This consistent high performance extends to data transfer rates when moving games between the internal and expansion drives, which owners describe as remarkably fast. The included heatsink is also a valued feature, contributing to excellent thermal performance and ensuring the drive maintains optimal temperatures even during extended gaming sessions, preventing any overheating concerns.
Value and Minor Considerations
While the WD_BLACK SN850P excels in performance, capacity, and ease of use, its price point is a recurring topic among owners. Many acknowledge that it is an expensive investment, with some noting significant price increases over time. However, a substantial number of buyers deem the cost justifiable given the product's quality, official certification, and the enhanced gaming experience it provides. A few users reported that the measured read speeds, while still very fast and exceeding PS5 requirements, were sometimes slightly lower than the maximum advertised speed. Additionally, a minor but notable issue for some purchasers involved the included PlayStation Plus trial voucher, with several reporting that the offer was either invalid or had already been used. Despite these minor points, the consensus remains strongly positive, with owners highly recommending the WD_BLACK SN850P for its reliability and its transformative impact on their PS5 gaming experience.
