How do I know if I'll see the difference between 1440p and 4K?

It depends on pixel density and how far you sit. This calculator estimates the pixels-per-degree your eye receives; past roughly 60 pixels per degree, most people can't resolve more detail, so a higher resolution stops helping.

What is a good pixel density for a monitor?

Around 90 to 110 pixels per inch (PPI) looks crisp at a typical desk distance. A 27-inch 1440p monitor is about 109 PPI; a 27-inch 4K is about 163 PPI, which is sharper but often needs display scaling.

How far should I sit from my monitor?

Far enough that you can't pick out individual pixels but close enough to fill a comfortable field of view. The calculator gives an ideal distance where your monitor's pixel density hits the limit of what your eye can resolve.
